fischer’s fastening and installation systems have been used in the construction of the new Biotechnology Centre (Polo Biotecnologico) at the Plesso Navile campus of the University of Bologna, which was founded in 1088 and is the oldest university in continuous operation in the world. The project is a key component of urban development and strengthens the research infrastructure in the fields of chemistry, pharmacy and biotechnology by fostering synergies between science and industry.

The new centre at the Plesso Navile is part of a comprehensive project to expand the university’s infrastructure. It comprises state-of-the-art laboratories, areas for applied research and complex technical installations that are essential for the operation of scientific equipment and safety systems. The requirements for fastening technology were particularly high due to the sensitive laboratory environment, the necessary seismic safety and the complex building services installations.

Reliable solutions for complex requirements
To ensure the stability, safety and durability of the technical installations, fischer has supplied bespoke fastening solutions. These included, amongst other things, high-performance chemical fastening solutions for critical applications in compliance with seismic standards, concrete screws and steel anchors for the installation of pipework, as well as installation systems that allow for flexible and, where necessary, adjustable routing of the installations. These solutions minimise vibrations and mechanical disturbances, which is crucial for protecting sensitive laboratory instruments.

“Securing a project of this kind relies on constant dialogue with the client and the coordination of expertise to deliver precise and reliable solutions,” emphasises Marco Zanellato, Key Account Manager at fischer’s subsidiary in Italy.

Digitally planned, efficiently implemented
A key factor in the project’s success was the close collaboration between fischer’s engineering team and project partners. Through the use of fischer’s design software, the fixing systems could be precisely tailored to the static and dynamic load requirements. In parallel, the Building Information Modelling (BIM) was used to integrate the fixing and installation components into the digital building model. This significantly simplified the planning, the coordination of the various trades and subsequent maintenance. The standardisation of the fixing points through modular systems also helped to reduce installation times on site and improve quality assurance through integrated checklists.

A contribution to the future of research
With innovative technology and sound engineering support, fischer has made a significant contribution to the realisation of a technologically sophisticated research building. The project was carried out in collaboration with ITI Impresa Generale S.p.A. (responsible for the construction) and the Studio di Ingegneria Diana Giarola (responsible for the design).

“The biggest challenge was to find certified fixing solutions that met the structural and technical requirements of a building designed for scientific research. Through careful planning, we have been able to define systems that guarantee reliability, safety and durability,” summarises Davide Radio from the engineering team of fischer’s subsidiary in Italy.
