Construction Robots Are Shaping the Workplaces of Tomorrow

Frankfurt continues to reach for the sky. Despite the rise of remote working and increasing office vacancy rates, new office buildings are still being constructed across Germany, particularly in economically strong regions. The reason: companies are placing greater demands on modern, sustainable and flexible workspaces, requirements that many older buildings can no longer meet. Just a few metres from Frankfurt Exhibition Centre, a new office building is currently under construction. Two fischer construction robots are drilling holes fully autonomously into the concrete ceilings to install heating and cooling ceiling panels using fischer EA II hammerset anchors. This increases precision, efficiency, and occupational safety during installation while accelerating overall construction progress.

Current market analyses indicate that demand for high-quality office space remains strong. Companies are investing strategically in modern workplaces to foster collaboration, encourage employees to return to the office and strengthen their position in the competition for skilled talent. In 2025, the Frankfurt office market recorded a total take-up of around 510,000 m², significantly exceeding the previous year’s level and highlighting the continued demand for modern work environments in one of Germany’s leading business centres. Close to Messe Frankfurt, in the heart of the city, a new office building measuring approximately 120 x 45 x 25 metres is currently under construction. The project is being developed by STRABAG Real Estate, while Ed. Züblin AG is responsible for both planning and construction. Completion of the building is scheduled for 2027.

To install the heating and cooling ceiling panels, around 16,000 holes measuring 10 mm in diameter and 25 mm in depth are drilled into the concrete ceilings. Two fischer construction robots are deployed for this task. Guided by a digital construction model, the robots drill the holes fully autonomously, creating the basis for fastening the panels with fischer EA II hammerset anchors. The fischer EA II anchors can be installed quickly and reliably using a simple hammerset installation. Their high load-bearing capacity ensures safe and durable load transfer. This enables the heating and cooling ceiling panels to be fixed precisely and securely to the concrete structure – a key requirement for the efficient operation of the building’s heating and cooling system.

“The accuracy is higher. And, of course, what is particularly important to us is that the use of construction robots also improves health and safety on site and protects the health of construction workers,” explains Andreas Wörsdörfer from the Construction and Project Management department at Ed. Züblin AG. “The robot cannot fall from a ladder; it does not suffer from long-term effects such as joint problems and similar strain. The health of our staff is protected.”

The integrated dust extraction system ensures clean and healthy working conditions, as well as the installation of fixing solutions in compliance with approvals – such as the EA II hammerset anchors, as seen here.”

A further advantage lies in the comprehensive digital documentation: “All drilling data, such as drilling time, depth, coordinates and reinforcement strikes, are automatically recorded digitally – precisely, comprehensively and significantly more efficiently than with manual processes.”

The high accuracy, combined with significant time and cost savings during drilling, accelerates construction progress and supports the successful execution of the Frankfurt project. The construction robots therefore make a substantial contribution to the efficient creation of modern working environments.
