Secure fixing in plasterboard

Plasterboard is an indispensable part of modern interior design. It allows for flexible room design and quick construction times – whether in new builds, renovations or loft conversions. But when it comes to hanging mirrors, shelves or lamps, the question inevitably arises: how does it actually stay securely attached to the wall?

Plasterboard walls are popular because they are versatile and quick to install. However, due to their thinness and porous structure, they are less load-bearing than solid walls. Anyone wishing to fix something to them needs to know how to do it properly.

Lightweight walls: practical, but with their pitfalls
What do you need to bear in mind to avoid unpleasant surprises? Firstly, the weight of the object to be fixed. A small picture frame weighs very little, whereas a bathroom mirror or a shelf weighs considerably more. Secondly, vibrations, such as those caused by slamming doors, affect the fixings. The wall construction must also be taken into account: is the wall single or double-skinned? Is there a cavity, insulation or a vapour barrier? These factors determine which fixing solution is suitable.

The right products for every purpose
For light objects such as pictures, smoke detectors or small mirrors, the fischer DuoBlade is a good choice. This self-drilling plasterboard plug can be inserted directly into the board without pre-drilling and provides a secure hold in no time at all. Equally suitable is the fischer GK plasterboard plug made of high-quality nylon, which is simply screwed in using the appropriate setting tool.

For medium-weight loads, such as lights, electrical installations or hanging planters, the fischer GKM plasterboard plug is recommended. This metal plug is specially designed for plasterboard and gypsum fibre boards and impresses with its high load-bearing capacity.

Even heavy objects such as large mirrors, wall shelves or wall-mounted cupboards weighing up to around 40 kilograms can be securely fixed. This is where solutions such as the fischer DuoTec come into play – a nylon tilting plug that makes optimal use of the cavity behind the board and distributes the load over a large area. Another option is the fischer DuoHM, a cavity plug with a metal sleeve and nylon body, which covers all standard board thicknesses and is particularly suitable for heavy items such as TV brackets or kitchen cupboards.

Tips for safe installation
Before drilling, check whether there are any electrical or water pipes behind the wall. Particularly with external walls or in the roof area, care must also be taken not to damage any existing vapour barrier membranes. For secure fixing, it is also important to observe the load-bearing specifications provided by the dowel manufacturer. And for very heavy or safety-critical fixings, it is advisable to consult a professional.

Stable in lightweight walls
Plasterboard walls are no obstacle to stable fixings – provided you choose the right solution. With the right products, mirrors, shelves and the like can be mounted securely and permanently. If you bear the key points in mind, you can benefit from the advantages of lightweight construction and enjoy a safe home.
